We could not be happier than we are for Mike Schaefer and his now Blackbird Performance Race Spec 1,300+ G3 Hemi powered (he might of forgotten we had to rename it from 1,200+ to 1,300+ because it ran so strong on the dyno) and essentially Super Stock legal style ’68 Dart.
Just about two months ago, he had asked us if we could help him make one of our Race Spec engines work in his beautiful car, of course we jumped at the chance, albeit he had a very tight timeline … he wanted to have it race ready and run it in the big Mopar event at Norwalk, OH that just concluded yesterday.
He was out going rounds at this event. It was an aggressive goal, and Mike worked non stop, with mock up parts we helped him with to have the car ready when the engine was, and a few days after it came off the dyno, he had it in the car and running, a couple weeks later he was turning on win lights.
As he mentions, it has a bunch left in it in the front half and even more in the back half once some intercooler pump / plumbing is further improved.
Regardless, it’s already a good bit quicker and faster than the 632 CID G2 Hemi Billet Tunnel Ram, two sizable 4150, carbureted engine it replaced. And, the Race Spec 1,300+ with a bracket tune up worked as the string of very consistent runs, and lots of win lights at the event attest. His best finish of classes he ran was in day one G3 Hemi class, about 6 rounds in, where he was the runner up to another very tough customer, Lonnie Smith (whose own Blackbird Race Spec 700+ is in the build process).
Just a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Mike and his team for all the hard, super quality, well thought out work, how awesome it turned out and what a great job he did driving it, figuring it out and winning with it … it is after all, why Blackbird Performance exists, that smile, those hearty hand shakes/man hugs, all from another G3 Hemi powered dream come true.
