Testing The Rocky Mountain Rocket at Beech Bend!
Kevin Burnett and his beautiful Blackbird Performance G3 Hemi powered dragster are on their way!
On the second day, under nearly full power, Kevin ran it out further down track, and on the 2nd and final run of the day, just about to the end clicking it off and coasting across with a 6.72 @ 197. Out the back door, that one, likely a 6.65 @ 203 ish. The DA was ~ 2,500 and the track, just ok.
The super soft converter / gear combo along with no air inlet to the sharp edge throttle body, just hanging in the turbulent air behind the radiator and cockpit, conspired to hold it back a good bit. But I will say, it’s been a good while since we came to test something approaching this power level and made 9 consecutive runs without spinning and with the two nearly full back to back runs, within hundredths going down track. Dragsters and big tires can be very cool.
Whether the primary bracket racing mission really supports this ex heads up guy desire to squeeze out the 6.1-6.2s it’s capable of, admittedly on kill, remains to be seen, but we do need to work it a bit more to get and keep it safely, pass after pass, in the 6.3-6.5s. We will stay at it and find the sweet spot of fast enough and very consistent.
He loaded it up and took it over to St. Louis for the upcoming Div. 5 double. There, we’ll likely try a couple quick things we can do on the converter and inlet with available parts and of course, we still have a bunch of tune up to play with… but rounds, consistency and win lights will be the primary objective.
Stay tuned.
